Moonlight Beach

The City of Encinitas is recognized for their dedication to vibrant communities through rigorous community engagement, thoughtful design, and active play space implementation at Moonlight Beach. This picturesque playground is designated as a Playground of Distinction by Playcraft Systems. The Playground of Distinction program recognizes community playgrounds that provide physical activity, inspire imagination, encourage intergenerational play, and/or offer a variety of inclusive play events.

The Moonlight Beach playground has a beach-themed structure with a colorful, climbable GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) surfboard, challenging climbers, traverses, and slides. A freestanding pirate-themed structure offers several ground level activities, and a spinning activity and swings provide fun for all ages. Poured in place rubber surfacing provides ADA access to all play elements.

Moonlight Beach received the Exceptional Design for Dynamic Play recognition due to the playful design that focuses on providing physical activity, creating learning activities and promoting energetic movement. This playground seamlessly integrates fundamental principles of physical play – cardio, upper body, balance, climbing, energetic and continuous movement.

Moonlight Beach, viewed by locals as a magical location situated right on the Pacific Ocean, was the selected site for a new playground. This beautiful beach community envisioned a beach themed playground that not only used colors that matched the surrounding natural elements but included shade to provide protection from the sun and its elements. The challenge was accepted by Pacific Play Systems, Inc., a company who provides playground design, installation, and outdoor recreation services in Southern California. After a lengthy bid process, they were selected to bring this project to life.
